At 10.20pm, a Beacon was lit at the top of the tower at St Catherine's Church in Wolverton. A ballot was held who would do the honours, and Sir George drew the name of Milly Arkwright out of the hat.

Before that, the well known Soprano, Fiona Oliver-Smith sang a range of songs, starting with the Brindisi from La Traviata, and ending up with some Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Several hundred people attended the event, raising funds for the church, and at the end there was communal singing of Land of Hope and Glory, I vow to thee my country, Rule Britannia, and four verses of the National Anthem.

"My thanks to Sarah Sladen and her team for organising this event - a marvellous way to round off the Jubilee Monday".
