To drum up circulation and awaken the interest of its readers, the Basingstoke Gazette have a regular "Face in the Crowd " competition. One individual, standing in the background of a photograph, is "ringed" and, on presenting him or herself to the Gazette offices, wins £20.
The Gazette photographer recently photographed Sir George on a litter pick in Whitchurch. One of his helpers was ringed - see photo - and invited to claim £20.
Seeing the picture, Sir George was able to identify his environmentally-aware assistant and direct her to the picture's offices. It was his wife. The cheque goes to the Whitchurch Silk Mill
