Andover Carnival
The issue: Hello, I have just attended a meeting with the Andover Lions concerning next years carnival. We run on a very tight budget and recieve no help from T.V.B.C. So have to raise the money by asking local companies. I myself am not a member of the lions club however i do have an interest in community events such as the carnival. It is an event that has been going for many years and in my view should not stop. However funding has become a major issue, is there an organisation i can contact or are you able to point me in the correct direction of any government funding that may be available to us, to secure the success of such an important community event? Many thanks Marie.

My response: Thank you for your email, and I was delighted to hear that Andover Lions will be running the Andover Carnival again. I know how much pleasure this gives to so many people – but I also know that the burden of running it falls on very few shoulders.

I am afraid I know of no Government funding that will be available for the Andover Carnival; central Government would take the view that it was the responsibility of local Government to support events such as this. You say that you have received no help from Test Valley Borough Council, but it might be worth dropping a line to the Mayor, Cllr Neal, to see if this decision might be revisited.

The most likely source of funding for the carnival are indeed the local businesses whom I know you are in touch with, and I hope that if you start applying well in advance of next year’s event, you will be able to raise sufficient funds for the carnival to proceed. I would be happy to join in any approach to local businesses.

Yours sincerely
