| David Miliband speech 13.2.08. |
| The issue: |
Dear Sir George, The most significant and alarming part of his speech in Oxford declared that " Britain has a moral obligation to spread Democracy worldwide and by military action if necessary". Since there many versions of Democracy, this seems to mean war against any country we dont approve of. War for ever is promised. I trust you and the Conservative Party distances itself from these outragious and dangerous statements. Yours sincerely Sam Dawson.

Dear Mr Dawson
Thank you for the email. I confess I have not read the Miliband speech in full and don’t know whether he qualified the statement you attributed to him – or indeed whether it is accurate. I think it legitimate for fellow-democracies to defend each other when one is under attack from a tyrant; but if there was an undemocratic regime that was causing no offence to its neighbours or the free world, and was not in defiance of basic human rights, I am not sure I would advocate military action to remove it. Many of our allies in the Middle East are hardly democracies.
Best wishes, George Young
