| Police Family Liaison Officers |

I am writing to commend to you the work of our Police Family Liaison Officers.
I only really became aware of the wonderful work they do after the tragic, untimely death of my husband in a freak road accident last August. It meant so much to me and my Sons to have someone looking after us right from the devastating knock on the door, up to and including the inquest where the officer made sure we were perfectly prepared. I very much appreciated having one trusted person who I knew I could contact at any time with any worries or concerns I might have. I was kept thoroughly informed at every stage of the proceedings which although rather drawn out (over 6 months), the officer kept in touch and made sure that we were coping, and managed to take many of the day to day worries away from us. I am so very grateful that we didn’t have to get through this on our own.
If the government is looking for ways to improve the image of the police, I cannot imagine a better way that this can be achieved than by extending this service and employing or training more Liaison Officers. My two Sons now have a renewed respect for the police force, and I know I have personally been singing the praises of this service, and the Officer who looked after us in particular, to anyone who will listen. I believe this service is very over-stretched, and would support any effort to extend it to help more people.

May I first of all extend to you and your sons my deepest sympathy at the tragic loss of your husband in such distressing circumstances.
I would like to pass on to the Chief Constable your kind remarks about the work of the Police Liaison Officer, and I will certainly tell Home Office ministers of the potential for improving the image of the police by investing further in Police Liaison officers.
Much of the correspondence I get from constituents about the police contains complaints, so it was particularly refreshing to get your email.
