| Composting and killing worms! |
| The issue: |
Hello
Yes, sadly, I did laugh when I read the article in last Thursday Gazette on how you killed those poor defenceless worms. I even smirked a little at your expulsion from the Friends of the Earth as well, sorry about that.
But help is at hand for the perils of your composting rat problems, no it's not composting rats, rather rats around your compost!
We have, here in Hampshire, though the southern bit, the largest vermiculture unit in the country. You are probably one of the few who are already aware of vermiculture, but in case not this is the breeding and farming of the lowly earth worm. Now I really do not wish to introduce you to these very special creatures if you are going to repeat your last encounter with them and kill them all, but if you are serious about ridding yourself of rats, and green waste, then I can highly recommend the use of a proper wormery.
We at Green by Nature have been breeding worms for the green waste recycling industry for nearly 2 years now and we have million and millions of them, literally. We are in the process of manufacturing the actual wormeries so that we can market them to the general public in order to reduce the green waste that currently goes into land fill.
If you would like to know more about this, or even try one for yourself please do e-mail me. And if you are seriously interested in doing your bit for the environment and keeping your membership a bit longer with F of the E maybe you would like to come and take a look! Everyone who comes to the vermiculture unit does 2 things, first they usually say “Wow, I didn’t expect it to be like this” and secondly spend the next hour asking questions from one of the team of very knowledgeable and experienced worm carer! Yes we really do care about our worms.
Kind regards
Jill Diamond

Dear Jill
Many thanks for the email and your helpful advice. I confess that the garden and the creatures that live in it are more my wife's responsibility than mine. I have forwarded your email to her to see how this might best be taken forward.
best wishes, George Young |
