| Lisbon Treaty |
| The issue: |
Sir George,
Now that the Lisbon Treaty is effectively "dead", why does the Government remain insistent on ratifying it? It appears that the people of Zimbabwe have as much choice as the people of Britain in deciding their future, although they at least may get an opportunity to vote.
Grateful for your thoughts

Many thanks for the question via my website.
Yesterday, the Conservatives in the House of Lords tabled an amendment to the Bill introducing the Lisbon Treaty which would have prevented immediate ratification in this country. It was defeated by the Government, with support from Liberal Democrats and some Crossbenchers. In the House of Commons, David Cameron led on the issue at Prime Minister’s questions – “Which part of No don’t you understand?” - and asked for confirmation that the Treaty was dead. No answer was given – you can see the whole exchange on the Parliament website.
Our position is clear; there should be no ratification without a prior referendum in the UK.
Best wishes, George Young
