Dear Sir George, May I offer comments on the present war in Georgia ? My understanding of the situation is as follows:- On August 7th, armed forces of Georgia attacked South Ossieta, a disputed Russian enclave adjacent to North Ossieta part of the Russian Federation. Most residents have Russian passports and pensions are paid by the Russians. Peacekeepers were employed on both sides, the Georgians killed 15. On 8th August Russian forces entered the enclave drove Georgian forces out and continued the counter attack into Georgia. Over 2000 were killed and remainder fled to North Ossieta where aid and medical facilities offered. The Prime Minister Mr Saakshvili has been educated in the US, has a degree from Harvard and whose wife is American. One can speculate that he was intoxicated by the natural friendship of his hosts and thought the US would support him in the war. The result to date is a very dangerous situation, a stand off between USA and Russia with threats from US to isolate Russia even further from international organisations, like G8 and their representative in NATO. Russia has additionally been under threat from US building missile sites in neighbouring Czech Republic and Poland. NATO membership has been offered to Ukraine and Georgia and in doing so revealing that the NORTH ATLANTIC Treaty Organisation as a US organ for European domination. Clearly atrocities are being committed by both sides, but the words of Mr Rumsfeld in similar situations in the past, "Stuff happens". At home, the majority of people have been indoctrinated to believe its another Russian war. The fact that approx 25% of readers of newspapers obtain their news from US owned papers explains the misconception. I have, in past posts, urged distancing UK from US but, alas, it is too late. Our entry into the wars with Aghanistan and Iraq , proven disasters, were opposed by 80% of the population. The US intrusion into media influence has guaranteed there will be no Socialist element in British politics in the forseeable future since they all support the Conservative Party. A personal observation :- I visited Portsmouth Navy Days and viewed the Invincable. The starboard side was plastered with letters....LOCKHEED MARTIN. Bet you thought it was HMS ? Kind Regards, Sam Dawson.

Dear Mr Dawson
Many thanks for the email about recent events in the Caucasus; you will recall from earlier exchanges that we don’t always see eye to eye on foreign policy. There is much in your analysis that I agree with, but important bits where I disagree. The statement that NATO is a US organ for European domination is simply absurd. Nor is it the case that the majority of people have been indoctrinated to believe this is another Russian war – you cannot have been watching or listening to the BBC or ITV. And it was news to me that the Guardian supported the Conservative Party. Nor is it clear why Russia should feel threatened by sites to accommodate interceptor missiles to cope with outgoing missiles from Iran.
Best wishes, George Young.
