| Your support for the rejection of the Megashed |
| The issue: |
Dear Sir George
I find myself in a somewhat unusual situation, as a lifelong socialist (albeit a self confessed champagne variant) I have found myself moved and impressed with your vigorous support for the STOP campaign. I have had to re-evaluate my view of traditional Conservative MP's being focussed on Big Business to the extent that the local community plays a distant second fiddle to one where you have been the advocate and public supporter of that community. I have no doubt that without your steadfast support and guidance we would now be faced with a disaster for Andover that would have ramifications far into our children’s future.
I am not saying that I have changed a lifelong ideal but you have done what I would hope all politicians aspire too, that of creating the space to think, to make up your mind and to be publicly outspoken on those matters that are truly important.
Thank you for being a great local MP and its not often I hear myself saying those words in recent years. If I can offer by way of an example how my view has changed is that I now find myself starting to think as I once did when Shirley Williams was elected my local MP in Crosby, Liverpool in the early 80's, that we now have someone that cares, will stand up and be counted and will not lay down when we need to stand and fight. Not bad for a conservative MP.
Thank you
Regards

Many thanks for your kind message of support for the stand I have taken on the airfield. I am conscious that I have not pleased all my constituents – including some who are councillors from my own Party! But I have taken the view that the Goodman’s proposal is simply not the right use for this site, and that activities such as the megashed need to be placed next to a motorway. I also believe, as the current Mayor said in the debate on Monday that “Andover deserves better.” I now want to work with interested parties in securing the jobs the town needs on the site.
Best wishes, George Young
