Sir George,
I am completely dissapointed with your attitude towards the refusal of the Goodman/Tesco development. I think you will find if we are being completely honest that most of the people against this development are voters within your constituency, whilst you obviously rely on there votes to keep you elected i feel that by backing them you have sold the town of Andover down the river ! Most of these people live in big mortgage free houses in the country and do not want to see the site from there gardens, unfortunately while they sit in there gardens every day, the rest of us have to go out to work and earn a living. Do you honestly think that you will create a business park with 2500 jobs for doctors, architechts, surveyors etc because if you do then you and the 13 councillors who voted against are even more out of touch with reality than i thought. Im sure you are aware that we are about to enter the worst economic crisis that this country has seen for 60 years, in the face of that our towns councillors have just turned down £30 million a year in local revenue, a £5 million interchange, £1.8 million performance bond, £2 million towards local traffic etc. Monday the 1 September 2008 was a dark day for the town of Andover & if our councillors and yourself bothered to take your heads out of the clouds for a little while and ask the working class person of the town what they thought i think you will find that there are as many people if not more who are all for the Goodman/Tesco plan going ahead, they just dont feel the need to get there faces in the paper every week ! |

Many thanks for the email via my website about the decision of the Northern Area Planning Committee to reject the Goodmans Planning Application. Councillors representing Andover voted to reject the application, as well as Councillors representing the villages. Councillors representing the two most deprived wards in the town – Alamein and St Marys Wards – voted No. I thought the current Mayor of Andover summed the position up well when he said “Andover deserves better.” The density of jobs provided by the proposed megashed is very low; there would certainly be many more jobs if there were offices and a business park, as opposed to a large Megashed. Organisations representing young people in the town have also spoken out against the proposal at public meetings, because they have higher aspirations. I genuinely believe there is little real appetite in the town for this proposal, and I make no apologies at all for opposing it.
Best wishes, George Young
