| Sentencing framework proposal |
| The issue: |
Dear Sir George, It was good to meet you at the count last Thursday. For once in my life I feel that there really must be tangible cross-party support for an issue. The Home Secretary's proposals, published in most national newspapers today, seem to be just what is needed to provide the consistancy and stability that the judicial system needs. Public confidence in the judicial system has been falling rapidly over the past few years. I heard Oliver Letwin speaking on the Today programme this morning and was encouraged to hear him expressing the desire to back the proposals. I hope that you, and the rest of the Parliamentary Conservative Party will resist the pressure of the judges, and do all that you can to bring agreement in the House to bear. Best regards, Lance Mitchell |

Thank you for the email. I will certainly be supporting Oliver Letwin is the policy he set out on the Today Programme. The role of the judges is to interpret the law and apply it in individual cases. It is the role of Parliament to set out what is the law. |
