Dear Sir George,
Chin-up and enjoy the Whitsun recess.
I am saddened that the reputation of the Mother of Parliaments has been sullied by the greed of a few and an unprincipled press.
It is my view that the vast majority of MPs, as well as doing a good job for their constituents, are honest and deserving of expenses relating to travel and "a crash pad near Westminster" (together with essential basic furnishings).
The mistake has been to not bring forward reform on MPs remuneration and expenses years ago and reward MPs their proper worth, which should be higher, and reduce some of the "generosity" of the expenses regime.
I hope and trust that your local party reselect you for 2010 ..' although, who knows? The Speakerhood under your excellent stewardship may come your way.
I might even be voting for you if you become The Speaker and no mainstream party stands against you! Let's not fall into the trap of letting only rich men & women and TU sponsored men & women to be our only MPs.
There's a great deal of bridge building to be done by the decent mmen and women that make up the house. You and your like are much needed.
Regards

Many thanks for the email and for your thoughtful advice.
I have been reselected by my Party to fight the next election; but have not yet decided whether to throw my hat into the ring for the Speakership.
We have a job of work to do to re-establish the credibility of our democratic institutions.
Best wishes, George
