Gender Recognition Bill
The issue: This bill has just been bought to my attention by a friend and it worries me a great deal. As a concerned citizen I am strongly opposed to it as it is an attack on religious freedom and it is contrary to the laws of God. I am an active Christian and take my religious freedom very seriously, in a global society we do not have to look very far to see people being oppressed or persecuted because of their beliefs - I appreciate the freedom I currently have and would like to continue having.
I hope this bill does not get passed, however should this happen there needs to be a religious exemption to allow churches to worship according to their beliefs without the fear of legal action.
Yours sincerely

Date Issue Raised: 23 Mar 2004
My response: Thank you for the email and of course I understand your point of view. The Bill received a second reading earlier this month, and is now in a Standing Committee.
I agree that those conducting a religious service should be aware of the background of the couple they are marrying, and the Government is being pressed to amend the Bill so this may happen.
Some Christians oppose the Bill in principle, but others support it.
