Dear Sir,
Petrol prices are consistently higher here in Andover than in Romsey, Southampton and Basingtoke. I don't understand the regional variation. In addition, the recent petrol price increases are making it very hard for me to make my necessary commute to Basingstoke. I have a very small car but that doesn't help! When will the government respond by lowering petrol taxation? |

Many thanks for the email – it is always helpful to hear from constituents on current issues. Your email raises two points – first, why is petrol so expensive in Andover? There appears to be an unofficial cartel, whereby the main suppliers match each other’s prices, but at a higher level than elsewhere. The only satisfactory response is to take one’s custom elsewhere. Second, Fuel Duty. I doubt if Gordon Brown is going to cut the tax on petrol; everyone says that his Budget is under pressure and I fear he is looking for ways to raise taxes rather than cut them! Best wishes, George Young
