I am delighted to read in today's Times that you are backing Ken Clarke to be the next Conservative leader. I only hope that the membership will follow your lead and make the sensible choice this time.
I do not agree with all his views by any means but he is the only realistic choice. He is probably the only Tory recognised and liked by students and people of my age apart from possibly Boris Johnson! He is liked because he has visible vices and thus appears genuine, the opposite of Blair.
Once more I congratulate you on your decision. |

Many thanks for the email – and I am heartened to learn that I have your support in backing Ken. I have just come back from the launch of his campaign to win over the membership –Its Time to Win – which went very well.
I have backed him in the two earlier contests and believe he is best placed to lead us to victory and then be a first class Prime Minister.
