"I was impressed by the way they have moved into defence equipment over recent months, to shield themselves from the downturn in the telecommunications industry. In a highly competitive market, they have carved out some important products and are ahead of the North Americans and the Japanese." Sir George saw Hawkeye - which tells cricket umpires confronted with an LBW appeal whether the ball would have hit the wicket - and HALO, which tracks the position of artillery from the sounds of explosions. "They are also doing some exciting work based on making fuller use of existing radio base stations, and, along with other partners, bidding for useful export contracts."
