Dummer
The village was once known as "Dunmere" (the hill - dun - and the lake - mere), but its rather a mystery where the lake might have been! All Saints church contains some of the finest historical treasures of Hampshire: the rood canopy above the chancel arch is a very rare survival, certainly unique in Hampshire. Not many roods had canopies and few of them have survived. No medieval roods survived their official destruction in the 16th century. The pulpit (1380) is one of the six oldest in England. It must be a special moment to stand where preachers have have stood for over 600 years. Dummer was also one of the earliest villages in England to enjoy public education - a bequest in 1610 provided a house and garden to be used for the instruction of boys.

At Dummer you can go up and down - the main streets are Up Street and Down Street!

The area has interesting Royal associations. Around 1788 the Prince of Wales rented Kempshott House as a hunting lodge. He brought Mrs. Fitzherbert here and it was said to be furnished to her taste. A 'seraglio' is said to have existed and certainly the Prince's conduct scandalised the neighbourhood. In 1795 he married Caroline of Brunswick and spent his honeymoon at Kempshott.
